Every year I conduct a church leadership school in KINGS. On most occasions the people who come are young inexperienced church leaders who are about to step out and plant a church or take over an existing church. I am always impressed by their eagerness to learn and the willingness to take advice.

However I have noticed that it usually only takes a few years until these leaders realize that there is an ongoing need for instruction and mentoring in the ways of church leadership.

Many of these fine emerging leaders come back each year to again be challenged and honed in various areas of Christian leadership.

The thing I notice most about developing leaders is that the ones who grow ask different questions to the people who dont grow.

The question to ask when observing and learning from leaders is not WHAT ARE THEY SAYING but rather WHY ARE THEY SAYING what they are.

Real leaders reveal more about themselves and their leadership by what they DONT SAY than what they do say. I am continually amazed and challenged when doing life with some of the leaders I am privileged to know, because they consistently DO NOT SAY what everyone else is saying at a given time.

Great leaders are masters at revealing themselves according to their agenda not the demands of others.

Great leaders choose their words wisely for maximum impact.

Great leaders also choose their pauses well, to maximize their encounters, especially in hostile environments.

Great leaders also know who to speak to, and who to ignore.

I am continually challenged by the great leaders we have in the Christian church in Australia, and for me one of the best environments to observe and learn from great leaders is the HILLSONG CONFERENCE held in Sydney every year in July.

My Church Planting and Leadership School will again be held from lunch on Tuesday 01 September to PM on Thursday 03 September 2009. Check out our kings website for more info.
