PEOPLE WHO CHANGED MY LIFE
There are many people in my life who have influenced me for good. Some through their role, others through friendship, and still others through their opposition to my walk of faith.
Many of these people I know and am thankful for.
However there have been others over the years who have influenced me for good – whose names I have forgotten – but not their investment into my life.
MY SCHOOL TEACHER
Even though I don’t know her name, she would often take my short stories and read them out to the whole English class.
She made me feel ten feet tall.
She encouraged my gift of writing.
MY ARMY CAPTAIN
Again, don’t know his name – but he was present in my world during my time in the war in Vietnam.
After an extremely bloody ambush with a chopper gunman taking a direct hit to the head – this Captain said, as he always did – “he died for a cause; that’s better than living without one.” Never forgotten it.
MY BIBLE COLLEGE LECTURER
We grew up poor. University was not even suggested in our family.
Consequently I never thought I could achieve much in life without higher education.
However I will never forget one of our lecturers in Bible College saying over and over again – “God doesn’t look for education, He looks for a willing heart.”
From that day on, I have committed myself to be willing to do anything for God. (PS – I have also studied a lot since)
THE DEVIL’S ADVOCATE
In my role as Senior Pastor of churches across Australia – I have often been opposed and attacked by people who believe it is their role to be the devil’s advocate – and openly challenge my risks of faith.
I am so thankful for these people as they have taught me to go back to God for reassurance of His promises – communicate the vision better – and then to hold fast with steely resolve.
TO ALL THE UNKNOWNS WHO HAVE IN SOME WAY SHAPED MY LIFE – THANK YOU.
