S – SMILE
The greatest barrier-breaker is the human smile. Make sure you smile with your eyes.
Keep smiling no matter the response.
W – WELCOME
The kind of welcome you give to people is their first impression of their encounter and it sets the stage for their ongoing responses.
Giving gifts is a great welcoming tool. Put something in people’s hands.
A – ASK
Ask interesting and positive questions – NOT, ‘How has your day been so far?’
Make your question a compliment, e.g., ‘That is a lovely dress, where did you get it from? – Or, ‘Cool haircut, who does your hair?’
Questions either get people leaning in, or drawing back.
R – RESPECT
Respect the right of others to their privacy or their emotional state.
Don’t be intrusive or make comments about their behaviour. Your role is to make people feel loved and accepted, just as they are. Just keep smiling.
M – MEMORABLE
Our goal is to make the moment memorable and it begins with you.
Make sure you touch them when you talk to them. Handshakes or hugs when appropriate bridge the gap.
Our aim is to give people hope:
Of a better day coming,
Of a place to be loved,
Of genuine acceptance just as they are,
Of a memorable moment on their journey,
Of a God who forgives and can make whole.
We get to change people’s lives by the way we greet them. It’s an honour and a privilege to be greeters in the House of God!
