2019 – MONDAY 18 MARCH
It is my habit to go for a coffee at 5am every morning.
The bakery/coffee shop opens at five, so I am usually the first customer each morning.
They have a roster of about five different baristas and it is always interesting to me to see the different way each one attends to their task.
I have the same medium flat white at 87 degrees – to take away.
Every morning this girl asks the same question. “What can I get for you.” No smile and no eye contact.
Coffee never full – 78degrees
These baristas have to start early, and must have the shop opened and ready for action by five am.
This barista tells me the same thing every morning – how hard it is to rise early and how big a job it is to set up on her own.
Usually not ready to serve until ten past five.
Coffee always slow – 75 degrees
This girl greets me with a “good morning Steve.” And always asks me how my day has been so far.
Her cheerful chatter is so welcoming and always makes the coffee taste better.
Coffee and chatter – 87 degrees
RULES OF THE PEOPLE GAME
It is all about the customer.
Don’t make their coffee – make their day.
A cheerful greeting – is good for the soul.
Communication is the highest form of honour.
Happy customers – are repeat customers.
Never serve a crowd – make the individual feel special.
To hear your name – is the sweetest of sounds.
87 degrees is a request – not a suggestion.
Train the spirit – then the skill.
Keep to your time promises – open and close on time.
Don’t just turn on the lights – switch on your spirit.
Front counter service – runs the company.
