THE DESTRUCTION OF TOPHET
“Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Even so I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, which cannot be made whole again; and they shall bury them in Tophet till there is no place to bury.”
In the Hebrew Bible, Tophet or Topheth was a location in Jerusalem in the Gehinnom valley where worshipers influenced by the ancient Canaanite religion engaged in the human sacrifice of children to the gods Moloch and Baal by burning them alive. Tophet became a theological or poetic synonym for Hell within Christendom.
1. TOPHET BEGAN AS A WORSHIP SITE
Good intentions create places where the invisible God can be found and worshipped.
2. TOPHET BECAME A PLACE OF FALSE WORSHIP
The invisible God became the adopted gods of foreign cultures.
False worship practises were adopted that were displeasing to God.
3. TOPHET WAS A PLACE OF DEATH FOR THE INNOCENTS
The sacrifice of burning children alive was practised to appease their adopted gods.
God must judge a nation when they murder their innocents.
4. TOPHET BECAME A CURSE WHICH COVERED A NATION
False worship leads to false practices which leads to God’s judgement.
The curse of false worship soon settled upon the nation with devastating consequences.
5. TOPHET BECAME A GRAVEYARD FOR THE DISOBEDIENT
God’s loving remedy for the destructive results of false worship was to judge His people so they would return to Him.
Tophet became a burial site not able to contain the volume of dead bodies.
6. TOPHET WAS THE GRAVEYARD OF THE DAMNED
It has been thought by some historians that the ancient site of Tophet was in the vicinity of the tomb where Jesus was buried after he was crucified.
When Jesus rose from the dead – He defeated death and the grave.
Hell is defeated for all who trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Goodbye Tophet – hello heaven.
